"The secret of change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old, but on building the new. " | Socrates
One of the most fulfilling and most challenging journeys you will ever go on is seeing what your body can do. There might be a chance you are in shape, completely out of shape, or just expecting to lose some weight. Nevertheless, developing a body that you can be proud, one that is healthy, and lets you really adore each last tiny inch of it really is a wonderful journey to travel down.
So what is the real key to making an enduring change with your body?
Consistency and commitment.
There's nothing else like coming to the table every single day and giving it your best shot. Your best effort must be yours and yours alone. Don't start comparing your journey to other journeys or else you will become deeply discouraged and deterred. Instead, really try and understand that you are contesting with yourself and yourself alone. Will there be times on your journey where you try and fail? Yes, many times. But each time you do, you need to come back with a firm dedication to achieving something you really wanted. Consistency will keep you in the game and on the field each and every day. Without it, you will suffer the the inevitable and bad reality of many new years resolutioners who give up each single year on creating the body of their dreams because they are missing the ability to keep on coming back repeatedly timeand again.
Commitment also comes to mind, but not the commitment you're probably thinking about. In our world, we are fed this strong idea that everything must happen at this time and if it doesn't occur now, it isn't worth it at all. Your body is going to change throughout all the years, so why don't you make a real lifelong dedication to keeping healthy? Is that a marketable and packageable idea? Not so much. But is it something that might actually change the course of your life? Absolutely.
When you make a commitment to keeping your body healthy through your entire life, you'll ultimately reach whatever goal you wish. It's about seeing the bigger picture than merely the few months in front of you until summer. It's about developing something that you can be pleased with forever. For me, that concept changed my life as I was able to ultimately hit my fitness goals after 12 years of struggling with my self image and food issues. But as soon as I shifted my perspective of what I was trying to accomplish, everything I had wished for came to me. So try it on for size and see if it works for you. Make a lifelong dedication to remaining healthy and watch how much your body will change in the short term as well.
Bring some commitment and consistency to the table, in all sides of your life, and things will change drastically.
