You've probably heard of omega 3 fatty acids, and you probably know that they are good for you. But you may not know exactly what they are and why they are so important. Omega 3 fatty acids are a good kind of fat that is essential for the proper functioning of your body.

There are a couple of main types of omega 3's. There are the short chain kinds that are known as ALA, and there are also long-chain kinds that are called EPA's and DHA's. You would do well to take an omega 3 supplement, because researchers are finding out that lots of diseases start in the body as a result of inflammation.

Cancer, asthma and depression are just a few of the chronic diseases that not only afflict many people, but also have a starting in the body as inflammation. The good news is that omega 3 reduces inflammation, and therefore can be a protection against these diseases. Your brain benefits from omega 3's as well.

But the benefits of omega 3's in your brain are not limited to just cognitive ability. People who suffer with depression don't just feel sad and despairing; they literally have smaller brains.

Since you now know about all the benefits of omega 3 fatty acids, you may be wondering how you can go about increasing the level in your body. The important thing to remember is that your body cannot make this type of fat. In order to get them, you have to eat them in your food or take them in a capsule form.

Foods to eat include catfish, shrimp and other shellfish. You can also get omega 3's in Brussels sprouts, kale and spinach. You may, however want to take capsules for convenience sake. Just be sure to get enough to raise your levels.
