Selecting The Proper Horse Rugs

Protecting the ones we love is very important. When the ones we love are horses we must consider the best options for protection. They often need assistance to stay dry, warm up and cool down. Horse rugs provide additional assistance when weather conditions become extreme.

Placing a blanket on your equestrian friend is much easier than you would think. There are clasps, clips and straps to allow you to keep the blanket in place once it is properly positioned. There are straps that wrap around the belly, straps that go between the back legs and fasten to the sides and straps that wrap around the chest. These strategically placed straps assure you that the animal will not be able to remove the blanket easily. Covers come in a wide variety of colors, weights and styles. Thicker weighted coverlets are for the winter months, while the lighter weighted ones are for the warmer seasons. Some will even provide protection against mosquitoes and flies.

Most blankets or rugs are used during the winter months to keep animals warm on exceptionally cold days. They provide extra warmth and often are water proof to prevent the animal from becoming damp from rain or snow. Many have additional snaps to attach a neck cover for even more protection.

Each different style and type of blanket has a purpose. There are turnout, cooling, fly and stable blankets. You will find that the weight will also vary according to its use. Some people use an anti-sweat cover to assist in absorbing excess water, before using one of the other types of blanket.

Stable cloaks can be provided to keep your equestrian friend warm when he is in his stall. Turnout coverings are best used when your animal is out in the pasture on a sunny winter day. Fly sheets are used to protect your animal from being bothered by flies during the summer months. Cooling rugs can be used to cool your animal's core temperature after a vigorous workout. There are many different types of coverlets to choose from depending on the need of your horse.

It is imperative that your animal be dry before placing a blanket on him. Blanketing him while he is wet can cause him to become ill. Dry him with an anti-sweat sheet before blanketing. It will remove any remaining water. Once he is dry, he may be blanketed. Remember that moisture can be held in by a blanket that is placed on a damp horse, which can cause serious health problems for him.

Allow your animals natural coat to grow. During the fall months as the weather changes, allow him to be exposed to the cooler fall air. This will encourage his winter coat to begin to grow. If you place blankets on him too early in the season, it will prevent his coat from growing. If his coat is short and think, he will need to wear his jacket until the warmer season begins.

Protecting your horse from problems caused by different seasons has never been easier. Determine his needs. Consider the climate. Each different season will bring different needs. Be attentive. Take your time when deciding what type, weight and size of coverlet your animal will need. Although it serves a physical purpose, horses look adorable when wearing horse rugs.
