Sometimes difficult to carry out, the theory behind losing weight is rather simple-- burn more calories than you take in. It is estimated that each 3500 calories represents one pound of body fat. To lose one pound a week, for example, you must eat 500 calories less per day than you are currently eating. Sadly, for the vast majority of people this is easier said than done.

The fact is that our bodies don't require too much calories in order to survive. Scientists have discovered that the human body can go two to three weeks without food before it dies. The thing that makes weight loss hard, on the other hand, is because our bodies are going to fool us right into believing that we're hungry, despite the fact that we are carrying around lots of extra unwanted fat that can be digested right into energy.

Do not get me wrong -- desire for food does serve a purpose. With an ideal-weight people, appetite is definitely the cue to absorb even more calories, as they will very shortly be necessary to continue basic life functions. An overweight human being does not necessarily absolutely need all of these calories, though, and the desire for food mainly tricks us into feeling that we do.

Fortunately, certain foods we eat can actually suppress the appetite, make us feel fuller longer and, as a result, cause us to eat less.

Drop Some Weight by eating Appetite Curbing Foods

As a general rule, foods high in fiber will make you feel fuller longer because their bulkiness will stretch the stomach and trigger the body's appetite suppression system. Apples, for example, are a great example of a fiber-rich food that makes us feel full. Oatmeal is also full of fiber and, even though it contains carbohydrates, those "good" carbs will help you feel less hungry. Nuts and seeks, like pine nuts and flax seeds, also trick the body into thinking we are fuller than we really are.

Although not necessarily a "food", simply drinking a full glass of water prior to a meal will suppress the appetite, take up room and result in a lower caloric intake. This is also true for green tea extract, because it is known that it stimulates the production of a bodily hormone responsible for appetite suppression and is believed to as well improve metabolism.

And, last but not least, people having a sweet tooth will be pleased to discover that dark chocolate works as a diet aid because bitterness works as a all-natural appetite suppressant.
