Losing Weight In Midlife

Most people are caught off guard when they enter midlife and find themselves gaining weight all of a sudden, when nothing else has really changed in their lives. Midlife means many changes and if you're not careful, putting on pounds will be one of them! Use the following tips to avoid the cliche of midlife weight gain or to help get rid of those pounds that have snuck up on you.
1. Engage in more physical activity. You don't need to be a triathlete in midlife, just a little more active than in previous years. Although rest is important, too much of it will accelerate weight gain and deprive you of energy. Stay active throughout the day by taking the stairs instead of the elevator, your bike instead of the car and not sitting for long periods of time in front of the TV or PC.
2. Watch what you drink and between meal snacks. Stop drinking soda and decadent coffees. This will cut out a big source of unnecessary calories from your diet. Most of those things are pure sugar and you will benefit much more from water and natural fruit juices. Try drinking green tea when you crave a warm cup of something and ice water with real lemon when you're thirsting for something cold and refreshing. Both will work with your body, strengthen your immune system and provide you with beneficial antioxidants and both can help you lose weight.
3. Release stress. Later in life, stress becomes even more dangerous. Not only does it contribute to weight gain, it adds to heart disease and high blood pressure, among other things. This is a great time to learn how to put stress in its place and enjoy more of life! Enjoy meditation, music, gatherings with friends and regular exercise to combat the stress that can so quickly pack on the pounds.
4. Eat for your metabolism. Midlife means certain changes for your body that should be accommodated with healthier foods. Look for ingredients that are pure and natural and stop cooking with butter and salt. Adopting a better way of preparing meals will eliminate a significant amount of calories and other things your body can't really use. Educate yourself on what to eat and the best ways of making meals. Avoid eating too much late in the evening and start every day with energizing foods that keep your metabolism going strong.
5. Start or join a group. Studies prove that a group of people accomplish more than an individual on their own. Working with a group also increases your likelihood of long-term success. Join with others of your age who are facing the same problem and work together to achieve or maintain a healthy weight. Schedule walks, yoga classes, swim meets and other activities that keep you social and in shape.
Maintaining a healthy weight gets much more difficult in midlife and beyond. Take control of your weight now and reduce your chances of the accompanying conditions, like heart disease, diabetes and arthritis. The effort you put in will be well worth the results you achieve!

Weight Loss Helps One Appear More Youthful

By Wiliam Merchant

Weight loss not only helps one look better in a suit of clothes, but is also important for good health. Carrying extra pounds can add years to one's appearance because fat around the face makes the face look more rotund. The person who is worried about looking order can look years younger by dropping the extra pounds around the mid section. The person who wants to live longer should also consider dropping those extra mid section pounds.

Heart attacks and other maladies are what people who are overweight have to look forward to if they do not make changes to their eating patterns. The heart is a muscle and muscles grow tired if overworked over time. The heart, if it has to pump around layers of body fat, will stop working properly over time.

The concept is easy for the overweight person and that is to burn more calories than those that are consumed. Think of a savings account that one makes several deposits to but makes no withdrawals. The result is a surplus of money, which is great, but no one wants a surplus of fat.

Burn more calories than those that are taken in and the body will operate from a deficit, which unlike a bank account, is good. There is an easy way to cutting back on calories rather than trying to count each calorie in each meal. Use a small serving plate and limit intake to one serving.

Instead of counting calories, use a smaller plate when eating a meal. If one is accustomed to eating off a large dinner plate then one is going to probably overeat. But if a smaller plate is used, for instance a salad plate, to eat from, one will automatically eat less and still feel as satisfied as one would if one ate from a large dinner plate.

Eating while watching the TV will cause one to eat extra calories because the appetite is distracted. Do not listen to music when eating because the eating urge is distracted by the music. Instead eat in a quiet area and quit eating when the body feels full.

Weight loss is an important factor in a health lifestyle. Overweight people are more prone to heart disease and other serious health problems that can be avoided by dropping those extra pounds. The simple concept to keep in mind is to burn more calories each day than what is consumed.

Six Alternative Workout Choices beside Fitness Centers

By Tony Gillis

Going to the gym everyday, day after day, gets boring. Even doing different routines, focusing on various muscle groups, can eventually numb your mind and decrease your motivation. It is scientifically proven that the lack of variety in workout routines and exercises is one of the most prominent deterrent for people getting into fitness. The solution? Make your workouts fun while keeping the intensity level high. We don't always have to go to the gym and hit the free weights for massive muscle gain or for quick weight loss. Drop those dumbbells and venture out to try some of these unique fitness options. Most of them require little to no equipment, but they do require involvement and having fun with others! Check out my top six unique fitness choices to make workout from being dreadful to fun:

1) Krav Maga

Krav Maga, in Hebrew, means "contact combat". It was created by the Israeli military and it is a combat martial art. The basics of this self defense martial arts can be learned in several months. The most interesting fact about Krav Maga is the fact that it is one of the most practical form of martial arts. It has a focus on fighting on the streets and against enemies with knives, guns, and other weapons. The fitness aspect of this sport is the focus on endurance, stamina, and strength training. One person may be attacked for five or more minutes. They may be choked, grappled, or attacked with weapons. This gives you an excellent workout, along with a sound understanding on defending yourself.

Where to Learn: Krav Maga training classes are usually offered in specialty gyms that do Crossfit, Zumba, or other martial arts (Kickboxing, Jiu Jitsu, etc.)

Did You Know?: Students train under different environmental situation. They have to defend themselves in a simulated nightclub or bar. With the lights turned off, a strobe light on, and with loud music, students will be subject to being attacked under these circumstances.

2) Hip Hop dancing or Breakdancing

Breakdancing (or b-boying) and Hip Hop dancing is pretty self explanatory, as it is known worldwide. If you watch shows such as "So You Think You Can Dance" or "America's Best Dance Crew", and when they are being critiqued by the judges, you can see the sweat pouring down their heads. Dancing is not an easy sport, and it requires great coordination, strength, flexibility, and rhythm. Break dancing especially, is one of the best body weight exercise anyone can get. There's no need for weights when you are trying to lift your body and bounce on one hand. I recommend everyone to go and try a class, even if it is only to break your workout routine and try something new.

Where to Learn: There are many dance studios that provide classes for beginners. They are often free as well for first timers! I recommend going to a reputable studio for the best teachers.

Did You Know?: The "Freeze" moves in break dancing are some of greatest upper body exercises. We can learn to be ripped and toned just like them!

3) Hot Yoga

Yoga, is no longer the stories we use to hear about. Listening to Buddhist background music while elderly men and women go into gentle stretching poses. In actuality, yoga is being participated by all age groups now, and it quite a difficult fitness challenge. It is a functional fitness that helps with bettering your flexibility and strength. It is a terrific form of exercise. Hot yoga is the extra challenge, where they turn the heat up to force you to sweat. Your toxins are sweated out while your mind needs to increase its focus in this sort of environment. For anyone trying out yoga, you will definitely see results in a short time.

Where to Learn: Hot Yoga is commonly found at yoga studios. Bikram Yoga is a well known style. It offers 26 different poses. An instructor leads the class through these movements.

Did You Know?: Besides focusing on muscle toning, weight loss, and flexibility, yoga also helps with overcoming stress by having you focus on your breathing and concentration. It has also been specific proven to have benefits to back pain, depression, and a number of different diseases.

4) Pole Dancing

A notable thought of pole dancing is that the movements are sexual and seductive, often performed at erotic showrooms. Though this point of view may be correct, pole dancing has also evolved into a functional fitness exercise. Men and women athletes alike are trying this type of workout. Pole dancing can be extremely challenging, requiring stamina, strength, and flexibility to perform a routine. The more advanced dancers are able to support their body weight on the pole without touching the ground at all. Pole dancing is now a sport for devoted athletes.

Where to Learn: There are specialty schools that teach pole dancing in many cities. Some dance studios offer it as well.

Did You Know? Pole dancing is an international sport event. There are competitions hosted around the world, and children as young as 7 years old compete in them.

5) Capoeira

Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian martial arts/dance mix. It is well known for its power moves, leg sweeps, and movement speed. The fitness level of Capoeira dancers are impeccable because they work on their balance and strength training using their body weight. The combination of dance and martial arts makes Capoeira one of the more interesting way to workout.

Where to Learn: In most urban centers, there are Capoeira dance studios that have lessons for the public.

Did you Know?: Capoeria is a contact sport where as the dancers don't attack each other, but support each other. Often times they will use each other to perform powerful flips or sweep kicks.

6) Dodgeball

The unique blend of throwing and dodging makes for an intense strength and agility fitness workout. It is functional fitness at its finest form. Dodgeball, besides being a good workout, is also extremely fun when you play with friends.

Where to Learn: There aren't very many rules in dodgeball and it is very easy to learn. The harder of this game is finding a suitable team to play in the dodgeball leagues located throughout urban areas.

Did You Know?: The world record of the most number of players in a dodgeball game is 6084. This fact has nothing to do with fitness :)

Be Careful When Following Fast Weight Loss Plans

In the event you were to search fast ways to lose weight, you'll come across 100's of suggestions. You will feel overwhelmed, you will pick one at random and give it a try, but what happens if it stops working? You try another one and another one until you believe you've got it right. Unfortunately, the fast modification of diets is called a dietary yo-yo and it has serious consequences in your physical and mental health.
The big problem with the rush for fast ways to lose weight is the fact that you are missing the point. You treat weight loss and weight gain superficially, you don't care what happens in the procedure.
Food isn't your only enemy in the fight with the bulge.
Weight gain has deeper causes, rooted in your life style as well as your way of thinking.
The choice of foods could be easily adjusted, however it is not as easy to fix the emotional over-eating pattern that keeps the aggressive circle going.
Find a little bit of time to explore your feelings.
Keep a diary to write down what you consume, whenever you eat and how you really feel after you eat. Do this check for a week, with out staying away from meals (simply being your usual self) and then take a look at the diary.
You will be surprised to find out that there are certain eating-behavior patterns. For example:
- you omit breakfast or consume a Starbucks on a completely empty stomach; - you eat late during the night after starving the entire day; - you eat when you feel unhappy, upset, sad or tired (negative feelings are usually associated with eating); - you feel guilty every time you eat, yet you seem unable to control the urge for food etc.
These are typical examples of what you may uncover from your eating diary test. The very best thing you could do would be to search for a complex weight loss program in your area, and sign up for it. Diet programs are organized in such a way as to touch not only on diet and wholesome eating, but also on food cravings, emotional assistance and fitness maintenance methods.
Stick to the above guidelines and save yourself the disappointment and also the personal waste you would experience with fast ways to lose weight.
Right here are a handful of sensible weight loss tips which you could try today.
No more skipped breakfasts! Have five or six meals per day, with lots of fresh fruits, vegetables and wholegrain cereal products.
Eat lean meat like chicken or turkey breasts and fish.
Download some easy-to-cook recipes and weight reduction meal ideas for a week. The web has so much to offer that you could really follow your food preferences and shed excess weight.
Eliminate white bread, white pastas and processed sugars out of your diet plan. Instead of a candy bar, you can have a carrot, a slice of watermelon or perhaps a wholegrain cracker.
Drink lots of water (a lot more than 2 liters each day) to eliminate away the harmful toxins. 2 cups of green tea per day also accelerates the metabolic process. Eliminate sweet drinks and have only one cup of coffee in the morning.
Physical exercise on a regular basis, at least 3 times each day and participate in outside activities as much as you can.
Rest at least eight hours per night. Try to go to bed at the same time every night.

What Is Your Motivation For Weight Loss?

There are so many ways and methods for losing weight and there are lots of offers on the internet of diets, supplements and exercise programs. The weight loss industry is big, you will experience that if you have done searches on Google; if you search for "weight loss" you will get more than 7 million results! The reason is obvious, our modern lazy lifestyle and all the "ready made" processed foods we eat make us fat and eventually we need help to get rid of it.
A saying says; "All roads lead to Rome." That's also partly true when it comes to weight loss. Most methods will work in some ways, but maybe not all as fast or efficient as another. For some people some methods are not healthy and possibly there are also some roads with dead ends also here. We are all individuals and which method to chose may depend on a lot of factors. In the end we have to choose an approach that fits our age, health, environment, personal preferences and sometimes even our financial situation.
Anyway, the most important thing is to take action and start doing something. To change your eating habits and start doing more exercises etc. requires some will power and to finally take action most of us need some kind of motivation. We need an image of how we will look like or how our health will improve after some time. The most common motivations are things like getting a more lean, strong and sexy body and because of this more self confidence. What is your motivation for losing weight?
My motivation also includes these but my biggest motivation was to add years to my life and to keep healthy as long as possible. This because I'm blessed having a 5 year old boy at an age of 60. I want to do everything possible to be able to be there for him as he grows up. I want to play with him, I want to play football and doing other sports together with him and go hiking in the mountains etc.
I was in no way overweight, but everybody can do better and it's not only about weight loss and keeping slim, just as important is to keep fit and be strong enough. In order to do this I had to take action and change certain things in my life. Sometimes we have to make small sacrifices for a bigger goal, nothing comes for free.
